What is the Tower of London?

A historic tower, the Tower of London is a 900-year-old castle and fortress in central London that was built to be the land’s most impenetrable castle. Built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s, the stone tower loomed over the city – and it still does.

Although nowadays it is mostly known for housing the crown jewels, the Tower of London has held and executed many famous prisoners in its time. From common criminals to overthrown kings, the Tower spared no mercy in the 16th century and was a spectacle of awe and fear.

Today, although no prisoners are held at the Tower of London (we hope!), it remains one of the most popular attractions in London and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you’re brave enough to visit, you can gaze at the magnificent crown jewels worn by the monarch at their coronation and the opening of Parliament, or listen to harrowing ghost stories and terrible tales of what happened in that very spot all those years ago.

What is the Tower of London famous for?

The Tower of London is known for its bloody history. The aptly named Bloody Tower is where notable prisoners such as Henry VI, Guy Fawkes, Anne Boleyn, and the Kray Twins drew their last breaths.

As the Tower hasn’t been used for gruesome purpose since 1941, it’s now home to over 23,000 jewels, officially dubbed ‘priceless’ and estimated to be worth over £20 billion. As well as sparking crown jewels, the Tower of London is famous for holding an array of historic weaponry and armour kept within the White Tower.

Who guards the Tower of London?

The important job of guarding the castle is done by the Yeomen Warders (otherwise known as ‘Beefeaters’) and has been since 1485. You’ll recognise the Warders easily as they wear the signature scarlet and gold state dress uniforms.

Although there are no prisoners to guard, the Yeomen Warders still have various duties to fulfil, including the unlocking and locking the Tower every day (known as the Ceremony of the Keys) and firing the cannon on the Wharf for ceremonial Gun Salutes.

What else is there to do at Tower of London?

The Tower of London offers so much more than simply one of the most extravagant collections of priceless items anywhere in the world.

You'll also have the chance to explore the ancient battlements that surrounded the fortress, a fully stocked armoury and a fearsome torture chamber.

Take a guided tour from one of the famous Beefeaters, or visit the White Tower to see the oldest part of the castle in action. Gawk at the medieval armouries and life-sized horses, armour and swords if you wish. You can even see the Line of Kings exhibition, where the historic armour of Henry VIII and other famous monarchs is housed. If you’re brave enough, you can explore the stories of the princes and Sir Walter Raleigh in the infamous Bloody Tower.

Rumour has it that should the six ravens leave, then the crown and country will fall. Still to this day you can meet the legendary Tower Ravens that guard the grounds and ensure the stability of the monarchy: Harris, Merlina, Rocky, Gripp, Erin, Poppy, Jubilee. If you can find them, that is. If you can’t find the ravens, you can still get your animal fix at The Royal Beasts Exhibition!
