Black is the Color of My Voice

Written and performed by Apphia Campbell

Directed by Arran Hawkins and Nate Jacobs

Following sell-out seasons in Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh and in London at Wilton’s Music Hall, the Fringe First award winner Apphia Campbell brings her acclaimed play with music to Trafalgar Studios for four weeks only.

Inspired by the life of Nina Simone, Black Is The Color Of My Voice follows a successful jazz singer and civil rights activist seeking redemption after the untimely death of her father. She reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.

On selected evenings, Apphia performs her cabaret Soul Sessions after Black Is The Color Of My Voice (separate ticket purchase required).

‘Campbell may wear Simone's trademark head wrap, but her performance goes beyond impersonation.’  ★★★★ The Times

‘Nothing short of sensational… Campbell will make you cheer for her, smile with her and then sting your eyes with tears’ ★★★★★ Broadway Baby

‘Compelling and heartbreaking story, punctuated with bursts of song.’

★★★★ Edinburgh Festival Magazine

‘Campbell transfixed, she charmed, she entertained and ultimately moved a packed theatre with her touching portrayal of the jazz musician.’
